At the turn of 20th century, the South of France and particularly Provence, became the centre for experimentation in avant-garde painting. Artists were particularly attracted by the unique light of the area. This affected the two major factors in two-dimensional representation, color and form. Provence was seen as a place artists had to visit, work in and meet one another. Between the end of 19th century and the early 1920s, artists in Provence broke with the convention and liberated their palettes and brush strokes. It is interesting to see what these innovative painters took from the région. Featured artists : Alfred Lombard, René Seyssaud, Louis Valtat, Auguste Chabaud, Henri Manguin, Albert Marquet, Charles Camoin, Emile Othon-Friesz, Pierre Girieud, Augustin Carrera, Louis Audibert.
